HYDE PARK- “We serve” is the motto of the Lions Club International. Hyde Park Lions Club takes that motto to heart. The Lions Club held its annual Easter egg hunt Saturday at 9 a.m. Thursday before the event, the Lions Club members got together to bag the candy for the egg hunt. “All but one member was there,” said Mark Hurd, club member and a member of the city council. Sewer connections need more regulation, Wellsville council says

April 7th, 2012
By Jimena Herrero
WELLSVILLE—The City Council amended the sewage system service requirements Wednesday. Under the unamended city ordinance, homeowners were responsible for their sewage and sewage lines until they connected with city lines. “City policy has always been that the owner is responsible for sewer until it gets in the line,” City Manager Don Hartle said. “But we don’t know where some of those lines end. We need to require they be marked.”

Stay tuned, Hyrum—your own radio station is in the works

By Tara Alvey
HYRUM — Getting good radio reception can sometimes be hard in Cache Valley. But on Thursday night, the Hyrum City Council took the first steps in providing a solution to that problem. Friend Weller, who has been in the radio business for more than 30 years, proposed to the council that they approve and support his idea for a low-powered radio station in Hyrum. The station Weller wants approval for would reach not just Hyrum, but most of the south end of Cache Valley.

Commission member Monica Merrill said she wanted to make sure Awada, owner of AG Sci Tech, understood he would be responsible if there was any sort of chemical leak. “If there were a problem with the containment, you would be responsible for that,” Merrill said.

Up Close at the 2012 Utah Legislature: An Intern’s Perspective

April 8th, 2012
By Lis Stewart
SALT LAKE—It’s amazing how in a mere 45 days the Utah Legislature becomes like family. I miss the amazing people I met there, and now we are all scattered back into the real world. Two weeks after the session ended, I walked onto the Senate floor and was sadly struck by how quiet it is. Some House interns might laugh at this, because the Senate is always comparatively quiet compared to the House. Both sides of the Capitol are nearly empty now, unless lawmakers are called back for another special session. But I won’t count on that. Until next year, dear Legislature. Until next year.

LOGAN—By the time College of Humanities and Social Sciences Senator Erika Norton positioned herself between the rest of the college’s student council at USU’s David B. Haight Alumni Center on campus, ready to make announcements for the top recipients at the college’s first Student Research Symposium, my heart—as I expected—certainly lifted.

Advice from ‘Last Lecture’: connect with others to build civil society
April 6th, 2012
By Allie Jeppson
LOGAN—If College of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean John C. Allen were to leave campus with only one last lecture, his chosen words to students would be to build a successful community by treating others with respect; community creates the success or failure of a civil society, he says. USU Honors students selected Allen, a rural sociologist, to deliver this year’s 37th annual Last Lecture on Wednesday. “A civil society allows us to begin connecting,” Allen said. “It doesn’t take a PhD to figure that out.”

April 5th, 2012
By Jimena Herrero

LOGAN—Wolf specialist Carter Niemeyer had a powerful message for his audience this week: “The wolf refused to be our friend and we’ve never forgiven him for it.” Niemeyer is a wildlife biologist and author of Wolfer: A Memoir. He’s also one of the biologists involved in the current “wolf wars” controversy. “Do I think they belong here? Absolutely.”

Summer session at USU, when the air is warm and learnin’ is easy
April 5th, 2012
By Kristi Ottley
LOGAN—More class offerings, smaller class sizes, better parking options, inexpensive housing, and great outdoor activities are just a few reasons USU students like summer semester. “It was the best decision I made,” said USU alum Chelsea Amdal. “Taking classes summer semester allowed me to finish my schooling a semester earlier, and ultimately resulted in getting a job I would not have been able to if I hadn’t completed my education early.”

Recycled milkjugs, tinfoil, candy wrappers make fashion statement
April 4th, 2012
Story & Photos by Kristi Ottley
LOGAN—Candy wrappers, newspapers, plastic bags, aluminum cans, milk jugs and soda straws. USU Family and Consumer Science Education students redefined recycling as they showed off more than 60 dresses and outfits made completely of recyclable materials on a runway in the TSC Ballroom Monday evening. “The textile industry . . . is one of the most polluting industries in the world,” said Family and Consumer Science Professor Lindsey Shirley. “We have so much choice . . . but we also throw away 60-plus pounds of clothing per year. Most of that doesn’t need to be thrown away, but can be repurposed and reused.”

Organized by USU journalism professor Matthew LaPlante and Army Maj. Matthew Badell, the Out of Iraq forum featured two panels of veterans and scholars, and an exhibit of the Iraq war photographs of Rick Egan, who covered the conflict for The Salt Lake Tribune.
