Where does taxpayer money go? Richmond’s recorder knows

RICHMOND—Taxpayers want to know where their dollars are being spent. Are they being spent wisely? Justin Lewis, Richmond’s city recorder, knows where the money goes—the general fund, the sewer enterprise fund and the water enterprise fund.

Smithfield cyclist survives crash, shows up for his own benefit dinner

SMITHFIELD—They call him Miracle Man. After an extreme bicycling accident on July 7, Smithfield resident Scott Archibald feels blessed to be alive. Hit by a truck coming down Emigration Canyon, Archibald broke or bruised every bone and muscle in his body and was not expected to live. Ten days ago, however, he showed up to his own benefit dinner, his eyes often filling with tears as he embraced friends and neighbors, simply saying thank you. “This whole experience is amazing, humbling and extremely overwhelming,” he said. 

Richmond Lions join with Logan couple to give glasses to the masses

RICHMOND—Out of the box and into the bubbles, that’s where your donated eyeglasses go when they get into the hands of the Lions Club, which has recently packed up more than 300 pairs of glasses to be sent to Peru. “We do it for the joy in our hearts,” said Lions Club district governor Wayne King. The existence of these service organizations means that “in a world of need there is someone to help you.”

Rocky Anderson comes to USU to talk press ‘deception’ & presidential politics

LOGAN—In what will likely be the only Logan appearance by a 2012 presidential candidate, Rocky Anderson of the Justice Party will come to Utah State University on Friday, Oct. 26, to deliver a talk on “mass deception” in the press, and about politics and the mass media in the current election campaign. Anderson, the outspoken former mayor of Salt Lake City, is co-founder of the Justice Party and its candidate for president. Anderson comes to Utah State University on Friday as a guest of the Department of Journalism & Communication’s Morris Media & Society Lecture Series. He will speak on “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: The Media in an Age of Mass Deception” from 10:30-11:30 a.m., including audience Q&A, in the Eccles Conference Center Auditorium on the USU campus. The event
is free and open to everyone.

Obama-Romney too close to call, opinion pollster tells USU audience

LOGAN—“I’m going to talk about politics because it is that time of the year,” began Gary Langer, founder and president of Langer Research Associates, at Wednesday’s Common Hour presentation in the Taggart Student Center. Langer, a public opinion researcher, compared a falsehood to tiny feathers flying away, and a man’s inability to collect them all once they spread. “We have one opportunity to get it right. We have to be aware of the information we share because we don’t want to spend our time chasing feathers,” Langer said.

Aggie TV News—USU raises $512M+; canal lawsuit; English major swims English Channel; sports & more  
LOGAN—The news team at Aggie TV News has a umber in mind: $512,861,410. That’s the amount Aggie donors have contributed to USU’s capital campaign. In other news, USU fires its longtime head tennis coach, Christian Wright. Landowners file a lawsuit to block Logan County and City’s controversial plan to enclose the open canal along the east side of the Valley. Students respond to presidential and vice-presidential debates. Freegans—eating healthier and cheaper. English major Joelle Beard swims the English Channel in 12 hours, 17 minutes. Students on a wire—achieving life balance through slacklining. Poetry and a beverage—USU’s monthly event in self-expression is growing. In sports, the Aggies beat both San Jose and New Mexico. Volleyball, hockey and the Fall “break” weather.

Opinion: Book nazis—Keep your mitts off my reading lists!

It’s incredible to me that busy-bodies spent so much of their time and energy last year trying to banish books from library shelves. “Incredible” in its literal sense: I can’t believe that anyone in 2012 a) is still trying to “protect” others from salacious stuff like Huckleberry Finn and The Diary of Anne Frank, or b) that they think anyone can hide anything from anyone in the Internet era.
